tread soft, darling

Falling stars and misplaced wishes
songbird’s heart and antique dishes
artist’s license, talking fishes-
find them all for sale here.

Stake your dreams and pawn your breath,
trade your tears and wager death
gamble years and roll the dice,
give no more than will suffice.

Bite your tongue and spill your blood
sketch with knife and stain your hood
unknot the fear you learnt in wood
and tread soft, darling, softly still.
